A new initiative from the Southeast Texas Poison Center is bringing safety-focused support to new parents across the University of Texas Medical Branch’s Labor & Delivery units in Galveston, Clear Lake, and Angleton.
Starting in October, 90 baby kits will be distributed to families welcoming newborns. Each site will receive 30 kits, each containing essential baby items along with poison prevention materials:
- 2 oral syringes
- 1 pink or blue baby bib
- 1 pink or blue burp cloth
- 1 sippy cup
- 1 English and/or 1 Spanish baby brochure
- 2 poison center magnets
The initiative highlights UTMB’s commitment to family health, community safety, and public outreach. By integrating poison prevention into newborn care, UTMB and the Southeast Texas Poison Center aim to empower parents with tools and knowledge to keep their homes safe from the start.
"These baby kits are a simple but powerful way to support new families with safety tools and education from day one,” said Chiemela Ubani, the managing director at the Southeast Texas Poison Center. “This is one of the many ways we are striving to help parents create a safer home environment for their children.”
