Our faculty at UTMB includes experts in pediatric primary care and in almost all pediatric specialties. We are committed to providing the high-quality clinical care you and your family need, in a caring and compassionate fashion, when you need it.

 

Island Pediatrics
There are two locations to serve you: Island Pediatrics East at the University Hospitals clinic on the 7th floor and Island Pediatrics West at 2067 61st Street, Galveston.

We provide services to children and youth from birth through 21 years of age. In addition to General Pediatric Care, we provide services for:

Specialty Care Services

Asthma

The Children’s Asthma Program provides consultations for children with asthma and related disorders and offers educational services in self-management for patients and their families.

ABC Center (Abuse and Neglect)

The ABC Center provides examination and treatment of children who have been the victims of abuse and neglect. Providers at the Center facilitate referrals to agencies that provide counseling and other assistance and help families apply for Victim Assistance Programs.

Adolescent Health

This program provides specialized care for adolescents with physical and emotional problems that are complicated by the social pressures of that age group.

Behavioral Pediatrics

Medical assessment and management of behavioral problems in children, including pharmacologic management.

Cardiology

Pediatric Cardiology provides care for children with known or suspected congenital or acquired heart disease, and complete pediatric cardiac surgical services for all forms of congenital and acquired heart defects.

Critical Care

Pediatric Critical Care is responsible for the evaluation and management of critically ill newborns, infants, children and adolescents with medical or surgical problems.

Dermatology

Pediatric Dermatologists evaluate and treat children with abnormal skin conditions such as warts,cysts,benign nevus,acne,psoriasis,atopic dermatitis, scabies and neoplasm.

The Diabetes program provides care for children suffering from diabetes including education for self management of the disease.

Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) LAUNCH

ECI LAUNCH is a special family-focused program that provides a broad range of resources for families with children up to three years of age who have significant developmental delay or disability and live in Galveston County, or live in Harris County and have zip codes of 77546, 77586, 77598. Services are provided in the home or the most natural environment as determined by the parents.

Ear, Nose & Throat

This program provides a full complement of services to evaluate and treat ear, nose and throat disorders in children.

Endocrinology

This service provides care for children with endocrine disorders such as congenital adrenal hyperplasia, ambiguous genitalia, adrenal insufficiency, delayed puberty, premature sexual development, growth disorders, turner's syndrome and thyroid.

General Inpatient Pediatrics

The hospitalist faculty are available throughout the day to oversee care, to be directly accountable for ward activities, to interact with the nursing and ancillary staff, and to conduct quality improvement meetings. These doctors facilitate admissions, keep the primary care doctor apprised of the progress the child is making and are available to answer parents' questions. Hospitalists provide care for children with common medical problems who need to be hospitalized.

Genetics

The Pediatric Genetics program provides evaluation of children and families with inherited or genetic diseases and an active prenatal diagnosis program.

Hematology/ Oncology

The Pediatric Hematology/Oncology program provides care for children with all types of blood disorders and also for children with cancer, and can offer the most current treatments for childhood cancer.

Immunizations for Public Health (i4ph)

I4PH provides science-based information to diverse audiences, including those who deliver vaccines, those who develop immunization policy, and those who receive vaccines.

Immunology/ Allergy

This program provides comprehensive care for children with allergic diseases, autoimmune/rheumatologic disorders, and genetic immunodeficiencies.

Infectious Disease

This program evaluates and treats children with infectious diseases and coordinates a number of special clinical programs. The physicians also provide consultation for pregnant women with HIV as part of the Maternal-Child HIV program.

Neonatology

This program provides a full complement of primary and tertiary care neonatal services with over 6,000 annual admissions to the Newborn Nursery and over 600 to the Infant Special Care Unit (Level III).

Nephrology

 

Pediatric Nephrology provides care for children with diseases of the kidneys and urinary tract, including those who need dialysis or kidney transplantation. Approximately 300 pediatric kidney transplants have been performed since the inception of the program.

Pediatric Neurology provides care for children with known or suspected neurological disorders, congenital or acquired.

Neurosurgery

Pediatric Neurosurgery evaluates and treats cranial, spinal, and peripheral nerve disorders in children.

Ophthalmology

Pediatric Ophthalmology provides a full complement of services for eye problems in children. Patients have access to specialists in problems of the retina and cornea, neuro-ophthalmology, glaucoma, and oculoplastics. An optical shop located near the clinic dispenses eyeglasses and contact lenses.

Pediatric Psychiatrists evaluate and manage behavioral health disorders in children.

Psychology

This program provides assessment and treatment, including individual and family therapy, for emotional and behavioral problems, including temper tantrums, sleep problems, non-compliance, ADHD, depression and anxiety, autism, and adjustment to acute or chronic illness. Services are available for children and youth from ages 1-21.

Teen Health Clinic

Special Services Team This service provides comprehensive management of children with physical and neurological disabilities that are expected to be chronic in nature. The team includes a pediatrician, a pediatric nurse practitioner, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, pediatric dietitian, school liaison and a social worker. The team aims to provide coordination of multiple specialists and the child’s primary care physician or medical home. Telemedicine clinics are offered in some areas.
