 Frequently Asked Questions.

  • What is prenatal genetic counseling?

Prenatal genetic counseling is a visit with a genetic specialist to talk about possible genetic risks during pregnancy. A prenatal genetic counselor reviews information about the pregnancy and any testing you have had, your health history, your partner’s health history, and your family history to see if there is a higher chance of certain genetic conditions.

You can meet with a prenatal genetic counselor during pregnancy or before trying to conceive. This visit helps you understand your risks, learn about genetic testing options, and make informed decisions about your pregnancy.

  • Why was I referred for prenatal genetic counseling?

Your healthcare provider referred you for prenatal genetic counseling to review possible genetic risks during pregnancy. Your provider can explain your specific reason for referral. Common reasons for prenatal genetic counseling include:

    • Blood test results that show a higher chance of a genetic condition
    • Findings on a prenatal ultrasound
    • Questions about genetic testing during pregnancy
    • Certain medications or exposures that may affect the pregnancy
    • A family history of a birth defect or genetic disorder
    • Trouble getting pregnant or staying pregnant
    • This visit helps you understand your results, learn about testing options, and plan next steps with confidence.
  • Is genetic testing during pregnancy safe?

Many types of genetic testing during pregnancy are safe for both the pregnant patient and the pregnancy. Blood-based screening tests do not pose a risk to the pregnancy.

Some diagnostic tests, such as amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling (CVS), carry a small risk for complications. Your prenatal genetic counselor will explain the risks and benefits of each test so you can make an informed decision.

  • What happens if a genetic condition is detected?

If a genetic condition is found during pregnancy, your care team will explain what the results mean for the pregnancy and fetal health. They will review treatment options, available support services, and next steps.

You may meet with specialists who focus on high-risk pregnancy or newborn care. Our goal is to give you clear information and support so you can plan with confidence.
