Eye Care at UTMB Health

Don't look at the sun

When the eclipse passed and you took that quick glimpse, you may have burned your retina. But how do you know? Here are some symptoms of Solar Retinopathy to help you determine if you need to seek medical attention.

Symptoms can be seen within hours of viewing the eclipse, but commonly occur within 24 - 48 hours. Typical symptoms include:

  • blurry vision
  • blind spot in one or both eyes
  • color blindness
  • distorted vision
  • changes in visual perception
  • severe headaches or migraines

Although there are no known medical treatments for solar retinopathy, recovery can be spontaneous in nature and may occur over the course of 3-6 months after the incident, though visual recovery may be incomplete and there is the possibility of permanent vision loss. An ophthalmologist can perform diagnostic imaging to confirm the retinal burn. If you believe you may have damaged your eyesight, schedule an appointment with an ophthalmologist.
