 Frequently Asked Questions

  • Who is at Risk for Aortic Disease?

Aortic disease can occur at any age but often begins in the 40’s or 50’s and progresses over time. Aneurysms usually require treatment in the 60’s or 70’s. Smoking and family history are significant risk factors, as certain genetic disorders, such as Marfan’s and Loeys-Dietz syndromes, increase susceptibility to aortic disease, often necessitating surgical intervention.

  • How do I begin treatment at UTMB?

UTMB welcomes patients at any stage of disease, whether a patient is newly diagnosed or has had previous evaluations and treatment. Your primary care physician can make a referral to either Vascular or Cardiothoracic Surgery. Please bring any prior CT scans or X-rays from other facilities to your appointment. Patients with extensive aortic disease will be reviewed in our multidisciplinary conference to determine the safest and most effective treatment plan.

  • What symptoms should prompt me to see a cardiovascular specialist?

Symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, palpitations, or unexplained fatigue should never be ignored. These can signal underlying cardiovascular conditions that require expert evaluation. If you are experiencing any of these warning signs, it is essential to consult with a specialist promptly to ensure early diagnosis and treatment, safeguarding your heart health and overall well-being.
