 Frequently Asked Questions

  • Where will I see my nephrologist for dialysis care?

You will see your nephrologist at the dialysis center, not at the regular clinic. This is important because your insurance covers visits differently based on where they happen. Seeing your doctor at the dialysis center helps make sure everything is billed the right way.
  • What if I am already on dialysis and have a nephrologist but want to change my nephrologist?

If you are on dialysis and want to switch nephrologists, you should first speak with your dialysis center's case worker or social worker about your options. They can help you arrange a referral to a UTMB nephrologist. Please note, you cannot directly initiate this process by calling the UTMB Nephrology Clinic. Coordinating through your dialysis center ensures a smooth transition of care and helps prevent interruptions in your treatment.
  • What conditions may lead to kidney dialysis?

Some of the most common include end-stage kidney disease, chronic kidney disease, diabetic nephropathy, hypertensive nephrosclerosis, glomerulonephritis, lupus nephritis, and acute kidney injury. In rare cases, conditions like rhabdomyolysis or obstructive uropathy may also require dialysis.
  • What is the difference between in-center and home hemodialysis?

In-center hemodialysis is performed at a dialysis clinic several times a week under medical supervision. Home hemodialysis allows trained patients or caregivers to perform dialysis at home, offering more flexibility and sometimes more frequent treatments.
  • Can I switch from one kidney dialysis method to another?

Yes. If your needs or lifestyle change, your care team can help you transition between types of dialysis when appropriate.
  • Is kidney dialysis permanent?

Not always. Some people with acute kidney injury may recover enough kidney function to stop dialysis. However, for most people with end-stage kidney disease, dialysis is a long-term or lifelong treatment unless they receive a kidney transplant.
