Targeting cancer with precision and compassion

Cancer affects millions of people and families each year, bringing not only physical challenges but also emotional and financial stress. At UTMB Health, we’re part of the progress that’s transforming cancer care through early detection, advanced therapies, and personalized support.

Our radiation oncology program is accredited by the American College of Radiology and recognized by the Commission on Cancer, reflecting our commitment to the highest standards of safety, quality, and patient care. Our team provides precise, targeted treatments that destroy cancer cells while protecting healthy tissue. Whether you’ve just been diagnosed or are exploring additional options, we’ll create a care plan tailored to your needs.

 Frequently Asked Questions

    • Card of any electronic devices you use
    • Referring physicians name and phone number
    • Any medical records concerning your cancer from another hospital
    • All of your current medications
  • What should I wear on treatment days?
Wear comfortable clothing. Please bring a jacket or sweater as temperatures in the waiting and treatment areas can vary. It can get quite cool. You may need to remove clothing and wear a hospital gown for examination or treatment.
  • Do I need to shave before my radiation therapy if my cancer is in the neck, face, or throat area?
Yes, your care team may recommend shaving before treatment. Facial hair, especially thick beards, can interfere with the accuracy of radiation therapy by affecting how the radiation beams are delivered to the targeted area. A clean-shaven face ensures the radiation reaches the tumor as precisely as possible.
  • Will I feel anything during radiation treatment?
No, radiation therapy is painless. You will lie still while the machine delivers treatment, like getting an X-ray.
  • How long does radiation therapy take?
The radiation itself only takes a few minutes, but each treatment session usually lasts 45 to 60 minutes, including setup and positioning. The full course of therapy can range from a few days to several weeks, depending on your specific condition and treatment plan.
  • Are there side effects of radiation therapy?
Side effects vary depending on the treatment area but may include fatigue, skin irritation, or temporary discomfort. Your care team will help you manage any symptoms.
  • Can I continue daily activities during radiation therapy?

Many patients continue their normal routines with some adjustments. Your doctor will provide guidance based on your specific treatment plan.
