Rhinoplasty at UTMB Health

Rhinoplasty

A Rhinoplasty or “nose job” is a surgical procedure where the shape and structure of the nose is changed through incisions done at the base of your nose.

Rhinoplasty / Nose Surgery

Noses are front and center of our faces. Nose size, shape and prominence are features that people notice first. Imperfections, bumps or asymmetry contribute greatly to overall face harmony and proportion. Additionally, a rhinoplasty can help fix structural issues such as a deviated septum that can obstruct breathing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who should get this procedure and what are the expected results?

A nose job is ideal for those who are concerned about how their noses look, or individuals with difficulty breathing or who have a deviated septum. This procedure can help achieve the look you are wanting or help to balance out facial symmetry or proportionality. This is the only procedure that can reshape the nose permanently.

What should I expect before my procedure?

A consultation is needed for us to develop an individualized surgical plan that considers your lifestyle, goals, specific concerns, facial structure and genetics, ethnicity and cultural heritage. This procedure is often combined with other aesthetic procedures. During the consultation, we will outline approaches to minimize visible scars. Surgeries are performed under general or local anesthesia in an operating room. Surgical time for a rhinoplasty typically is three to four hours.

What should I expect after my procedure?

Typically, an overnight hospital stay is not needed, and you can go home the same day. Your specific recovery will depend upon the tailored package you choose, but for most patients, expect some pain, swelling and bruising to occur around your nose, especially in the first couple of days after surgery. You will also see some slight bleeding and drainage from your nose. Gauze pads may be used to help absorb drainage. It may be better to bathe instead of showering while you use gauze pads. It is also important to not blow your nose. Any activity that causes you to strain should also be avoided as it may place excess pressure on your healing wounds. After one to two weeks, you may feel well enough to resume normal activities, and go outdoors. However, don’t rush outdoors without proper protection, such as a wide brimmed hat and sunscreen, as your skin will be more susceptible to sunburn. Depending upon the extent of your facelift, we will advise on when it is safe to return to your makeup routine. Results should be apparent after the first month.

Why should I consider surgery?

A rhinoplasty is the only surgical procedure that can reshape your nose.

What if I’m not ready for surgery?

If you feel a surgical intervention isn’t for you at this time, we offer a range of fillers like Restylane, Belotero and Juvéderm products that are easy and non-invasive. See our non-surgical services.

Can this be combined with other procedures?

Yes! Common surgeries combined with a rhinoplasty include a face lift, neck lift, brow lift, eyelid surgery or chin and cheek augmentation. Other body contouring procedures can be done at the same time. Schedule a consult with one our surgeons to determine what is the best approach for you.
