Frequently Asked Questions

Who should get this procedure and what are the expected results?

Hairline lowering will benefit those who have a high hairline and are looking to lower it, or those who have a large forehead. These often distract from other facial features and facial symmetry and can lead to trying to cover this up with various hairstyles. Good candidates are those with good scalp laxity and without family history of hair loss or pattern baldness.

What should I expect before my procedure?

A consultation is needed for us to develop an individualized surgical plan that considers your goals, specific concerns, facial structure and genetics, ethnicity and cultural heritage. During the procedure, incisions will be made in the hairline and forehead, and skin and connective tissue will be carefully separated and excess removed to close the desired gap and shorten the forehead. Sutures are carefully placed in the hairline to minimize visible scarring. This procedure is typically done under local or general anesthesia.

What should I expect after my procedure?

Typically, an overnight hospital stay is not needed, and you can go home the same day. For most patients, expect some pain, swelling and bruising to occur around the forehead, which will feel tight, especially in the first couple of days after surgery. Some may feel light headaches as well. After a week, we will schedule a return visit to check on progress as well as remove sutures. After one to two weeks, you may feel well enough to resume normal activities and go outdoors. However, don’t rush outdoors without proper protection, such as a wide brimmed hat and sunscreen, as your skin will be more susceptible to sunburn. Results should be apparent after the first month.

Why should I consider surgery?

Many people are not aware that this is an option to reduce the appearance of a high forehead; this is one of the few surgical options to address this concern.

What if I’m not ready for surgery?

If you are not ready for surgery, there are options such as hair transplants to consider instead. Please schedule a consultation with our surgeons to discuss your options.

Can this be combined with other procedures?

Yes! Common surgeries combined with hairline lowering include brow lift, eyelid surgery or facelift. Other body contouring procedures can be done at the same time. Schedule a consult with one our surgeons to determine what is the best approach for you.
