Neck Lift at UTMB Health

Neck Lift

A neck lift is a surgical procedure that improves visible signs of aging in the jawline and neck.

Neck Lift Procedure

As we age, tell-tale signs of aging accumulate, such as loss of elasticity, wrinkles, lines and sagging skin. This can accumulate in places below the chin, like the neck and give the appearance of a double chin or “turkey neck” or vertical banding. While some of these can be minimized in your 30s and 40s through creams, Botox and other non-invasive treatments, these do not offer long-lasting results.

A neck lift is a surgical procedure that improves visible signs of aging in the jawline and neck. This procedure can address excess fat and skin relaxation that creates jowls, excess fatty deposits under the chin, loose neck skin and muscle banding in the neck.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who should get this procedure and what are the expected results?

Those who have visible signs of aging such as a double chin, sagging skin or vertical banding will get you out of those turtlenecks. Good surgical candidates need to have good skin laxity in the neck as well. A neck lift will tighten skin and neck muscles, and remove excess fat, leading to a more refined neck appearance that smooths out vertical bands. A neck lift can also help redefine your jawline as well.

What should I expect before my procedure?

During your consultation, we will do a full evaluation of your facial structures, discuss your goals and recommend an individualized surgical plan that takes those goals into account, as well as ethnicity and cultural heritage. All surgeries will include incision points in under the jaw or behind the ears for almost invisible scars, and patients will be under general or local anesthesia in an operating room. Most surgeries take two to three hours.

What should I expect after my procedure?

Typically, an overnight hospital stay is not needed, and you can go home the same day. Your specific recovery will depend upon the tailored package you choose, but for most patients, some pain, swelling and bruising will be present. Ice packs can help to reduce swelling, bruising and pain for the first 48 hours. After one to two weeks, you may feel well enough to resume normal activities, and stitches may be ready to come out. However, minimizing exposure to direct sun will be needed, and if you must go outdoors, wearing a wide brimmed hat and sunscreen is recommended. Results should be apparent after the first month.

Why should I consider surgery?

A neck lifts is a onetime surgery that can provide long-lasting enhancement. Nonsurgical options like dermal fillers and injections provide temporary results that need regular maintenance.

What if I’m not ready for surgery?

If you feel a surgical intervention isn’t for you at this time, we offer a range of fillers and skin care treatments that are easy and non-invasive. See our non-surgical services.

Can this be combined with other procedures?

Yes! Common surgeries combined with a neck lift include facelift or liposuction. Other body contouring procedures can be done at the same time. Schedule a consult with one our surgeons to determine what is the best approach for you.
