Meet the event speakers*

Dr. Marie Dawlett

Dr. Marie Dawlett is a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Texas Medical Branch.  She practices as a Pediatric Hospitalist and serves as the Pediatric Medical Director in the Clear Lake Campus, and Co-Division Director for the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine.  She graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a B.S. in Biochemistry and subsequently attended medical school and pediatrics residency at UTMB-Galveston. Dr. Dawlett's interests are improving the quality of care for hospitalized children through participation in American Academy of Pediatrics Quality initiatives and the clinical skills training and simulation assessments of medical students throughout the medical school curriculum. She is the recipient of the Pediatric Educator Award for Excellence in Medical Student Education, Excellence in Clinical Teaching Award, Scholars in Education scholar, and member of the Academy of Master Teachers.

Dr. Carmen Mora

Dr. Carmen Mora serves as an Assistant Professor specializing in Pediatric Surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX. She brings a comprehensive academic background to her medical career. Dr. Mora earned her bachelor's degree in biochemistry from Texas A&M in College Station before pursuing her medical degree at Texas A&M Health Science Center-COM.
After graduating from medical school at Texas A&M Health Science Center-COM, she completed her general surgery residency at UMass-Baystate. Her commitment to advancing pediatric care led her to pursue specialized training through fellowships in Pediatric Surgical Critical Care at the University of Tennessee- Le Bonheur Children’s, Pediatric Minimally Invasive Surgery at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, and Pediatric Surgery at UCSF-Benioff Children’s in California.
Raised in Houston, Texas, Dr. Mora’s cultural versatility extends to her fluency in Spanish, enhancing her ability to connect with an underserved patient population. In her role as Assistant Professor, Dr. Mora combines her extensive training, multicultural proficiency, and compassionate approach to provide top-tier care and make a lasting impact on the lives of young patients. Her true passion lies in advocating for the most vulnerable children, embodying her unwavering belief in delivering equitable healthcare to every child, with a special focus on those who are underrepresented in our society.

Dr. Faranak Behnia

Dr. Faranak Behnia is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Maternal Fetal Medicine. Dr. Behnia is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Maternal Fetal Medicine. She received her medical degree from the University of Nevada Reno School of Medicine. After her medical training, Dr. Behnia completed her Obstetrics and Gynecology residency at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center and her MFM fellowship at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.

Her clinical interests include prenatal ultrasound screening and diagnosis, genetic screening and diagnosis, management of pregnancies with complex maternal medical conditions or congenital fetal abnormalities. Her research interests include oxidative stress induced senescence of fetal membranes and its role in parturition, and impact of environmental toxicants in preterm birth.

She is a recipient of multiple awards including Outstanding Achievement in Medical Student Education, Outstanding Basic Science Poster Awards and Patients Choice Award.

As an MFM specialist, Dr. Behnia believes taking care of women during pregnancy is a privilege. She is passionate about providing highest quality of care for high-risk pregnant patients and meeting the needs of their care providers.

Dr. Behnia is a proud resident of Galveston County. When she is not caring for her patients, Dr. Behnia enjoys spending time with her family and fitness.

Dr. Nadim Islam

Accomplished Emergency Medicine Medical Director with demonstrated successes leading emergency medical teams in a wide range of healthcare environments. Experienced military physician with record of providing strong leadership in stressful, high volume, military emergency department operations. Concurrently experienced as a hospital Chief Quality Officer, developing hospital-wide quality initiatives, while also ensuring that the Emergency Department operation were integrated in all such initiatives. Experienced in building high performing teams to provide high quality efficient care by engaging physicians, nursing colleagues and administration. A Team Player and Servant Leader.
