Breast Augmentation at UTMB Health

Breast Augmentation

There are a multitude of reasons why women might consider a breast augmentation, which can enhance the breasts by increasing their size, as well as reshaping or restoring them to achieve a desired look.

Breast Implants / Augmentation

Breast augmentation, commonly called a “boob job,” is a surgical procedure that places an implant or fat graft (fat reinserted from elsewhere in the patient’s body) to increase breast size. A breast augmentation may also create a more rounded breast shape, as well as correct naturally occurring asymmetry in the breasts. For breasts that sag or droop significantly, another surgical procedure, a breast lift, may be performed in conjunction with the augmentation or at a separate time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who should get this procedure and what are the expected results?

Maybe you have always felt self-conscious about having small breasts, or worried that your body looks out of proportion or off-balance due to your breast size. If you have had children or lost weight, you may have experienced a loss of breast volume that you wish to restore. Breast volume is also lost during the natural aging process, and many women find that breast augmentation can help them achieve a more youthful appearance. Candidates should be physically healthy, maintain a stable weight, and should not smoke.

What should I expect before my procedure?

A consultation with one of our surgeons will be the best way to determine if you are a candidate for breast augmentation, what approach to take, and what size and type of implant best suits you. You will get to review before and after pictures of other patients with similar body types to get an idea of what your result may look like. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and generally takes 1 to 2 hours.

What should I expect after my procedure?

After surgery, you'll be wrapped in an elastic bandage or a surgical bra over gauze dressings. You will receive instructions to follow at home and prescriptions for medication, and schedule a follow-up appointment with your surgeon. You should expect to keep your support garments on per your surgeon’s instruction, and limit activity. You may experience acute pain for up to five days and will have residual swelling for a few weeks. Be sure to follow your surgeon’s instructions carefully. The results of breast augmentation will be immediately apparent, but you should allow a few weeks to months for the breasts to “settle” before seeing final results.

Which type of implant should I get?

There are many factors that determine which implant type is right for a particular patient. A thorough conversation with your surgeon will help you understand the different types and their pros and cons, so that you can make a decision together about the best implant to achieve your desired result.

Will I have scars after breast augmentation?

Incisions can often be placed in areas such as the crease under the breast where scars will be concealed. Marks left behind from your incisions should fade over time. It’s important to follow your doctor’s instructions to have the best results as you heal.

Can this be combined with other procedures?

Yes! Common surgeries combined with a breast procedure include tummy tuck or liposuction. Other body contouring procedures can be done at the same time. Schedule a consult with one of our surgeons to determine what is the best approach for you.
