UTMB Health Celebrates "BRA" Day and Honoring Breast Cancer Survivors Oct. 16

Breast Cancer Awareness in October: BRA DayBreast Reconstruction Awareness Day is an initiative designed to promote education, awareness and access for women who may wish to consider post-mastectomy breast reconstruction. It is a collaborative effort that includes plastic surgeons specializing in breast surgery, plastic surgery nurse specialists, medical device industry representatives and breast cancer support groups.

As a salute to our breast reconstruction patients and breast cancer survivors, UTMB will host a breakfast on October 16, 2013, at the Specialty Care Center at Victory Lakes.

Lunch and Learn about reconstruction on Galveston campus noon-1pm in Caduceus.

Ladies Night Out event at the Specialty Care Center at Victory Lakes. 5:30 pm - 8 pm

  • Breast reconstruction ?? (in conference room at 7pm)
  • Honor breast cancer survivors
  • Meet & Greet with survivors
  • Tour of our facility
  • Mammos available (walk-in or scheduled)
  • UTMB information on screening, prevention, treatment and reconstruction options
  • Shopping, refreshments
  • Door prizes at 6:30 pm and 7:30 pm

UTMB offers ‘Sunday Screenings’ - Free Screening Mammograms for women in our community

Mammogram program for uninsured Galveston County residents

UTMB Health and The Ruth Kempner Endowment for Breast Cancer Screening are partnering to provide free screening mammograms for uninsured women in our community. The Susan G. Komen foundation has stated that a significant number of uninsured women in Galveston County are not receiving their annual screening mammograms. In an effort to reach these uninsured women, UTMB Health is bringing the mobile mammography van to churches in Galveston County. The screenings are being offered at:

Although these events are being hosted at local churches, uninsured program participants do not need to be members of these church congregations in order to receive a free screening mammogram. However, participants need to PRE REGISTER for the program and have to meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Legal resident of Galveston County
  • Between 40-64 years old
  • Uninsured
  • Participants cannot have mammogram coverage through Medicaid and/or Medicare
  • Not pregnant
  • Have not received a mammogram in the past 12 months
  • No personal history of breast cancer in the past 5 years
  • No current breast pain, breast discharge, or palpable breast abnormalities
  • Must complete and sign the application and consent forms

The mobile van will only provide free screening mammograms for pre-registered, uninsured women. To enroll, pick up a registration packet from any of the church offices or the UTMB Galveston Breast Imaging Department (2nd floor of the University Hospital Clinic Bldg) or the UTMB Specialty Care Center at Victory Lakes, League City (2nd floor),or download here in englishor spanish, and return these items to any of these locations no later than October 13 (St Mary), October 20 (Sanford’s Temple), or October 27 (Mt Olive).
