At UTMB, our centers of clinical excellence advance care by drawing upon knowledge generated in our research endeavors. Our team of physicians, nurses, therapists, technologists, pharmacists, residents, dietitians and support staff is dedicated to ensuring that you receive the highest standard of patient care and comfort during your stay.

Areas of clinical excellence at UTMB include organ transplantation; cancer care; women’s, infants’ and children’s health; cardiovascular health; neurology and neurosurgery; ophthalmology; otolaryngology, our nationally accredited Center for Obesity and Metabolic Surgery; breast imaging and care; pediatric and adult burns care; gastroenterology; and diabetes care. The university’s comprehensive geriatric program features the innovative Acute Care for Elders (ACE) Unit, designed to help hospitalized seniors maintain their independence. International leader in burns care

• 43-year partnership with first of three Shriners hospitals dedicated to pediatric burns resulted in advances such as pressure garments, nutritional support and pain management that are now-standard treatments worldwide for severely burned children; now investigating how knowledge of inflammation seen in burns could inform
  research on host of chronic conditions affecting Texans (including asthma, diabetes and aging)
• Blocker Burn Unit for adults has one of the highest survival rates in the U.S. for patients with major burn injury
• UTMB experts have trained more than 125 burn specialists now in practice and authored 80% of burn textbooks worldwide

Women and children’s health

• Includes 29-site Regional Maternal and Child Health Program, which serves nearly 110,000 women and children from 104 Texas counties
• Breast Imaging Center one of 13 throughout Texas to be designated a Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology

Diabetes, metabolism and obesity

• Stark Diabetes Center has more than 600 patient visits each month
• Cutting-edge research includes first published account of ability to transform umbilical cord stem cells into insulin-producing cells
• Center for Obesity and Metabolic Surgery deemed one of only three Level 1A Centers of Excellence in Texas by the American College of Surgeons
