On Wednesday, Oct. 16, UTMB Health will host a Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day to promote education, awareness and access for women who may wish to consider post-mastectomy breast reconstruction. It is a collaborative effort during Breast Health month that includes plastic surgeons specializing in breast surgery, plastic surgery nurse specialists, medical device industry representatives and breast cancer support groups.
Wednesday, Oct. 16
Noon - 1 p.m.
Caduceus Room, 6th Floor
Administration Bldg., Galveston
(Parking available in Garage 1)
Two decades ago, nearly every woman diagnosed with breast cancer received a modified radical mastectomy and was left with an empty space where her breast used to be. In 1998, the federal government mandated that insurance cover the cost for breast reconstruction after breast cancer surgery. Even for women whose mastectomy was decades ago, they can still have breast reconstruction covered by insurance now. This is just one of many topics surrounding breast reconstruction that will be discussed at the UTMB Breast Reconstruction Lunch and Learn Oct. 16, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Caduceus Room, Sixth Floor, Administration Building on the UTMB campus in Galveston, at Eighth and Market streets. Parking is available in Public Garage 1. Parking tokens will be provided. UTMB’s Dr. Karen Powers, a plastic surgeon who specializes in breast reconstruction, will lead the discussion. A light lunch will be served. The event is free and open to the public but reservations are required. Call 832-505-1020 to reserve a space.
Wednesday, Oct. 16
5:30 - 8 p.m.
Specialty Care Center at Victory Lakes, League City
Everyone is invited to a night out on the town. Women who attend UTMB’s free “Ladies’ Night Out” will be treated to shopping, wine, hors d’oeuvres, make-up and door prizes. They will also get to meet members of UTMB’s Breast Health Team — breast surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, plastic reconstructive surgeons, breast radiologists, pathologists, patient navigators, occupational therapy lymphedema specialists, oncology social workers and complementary medicine physician specialists — all of whom work together to create customized treatment plans for every woman who comes to UTMB for breast cancer treatment. The event will offer tours of the Breast Health and Imaging Center and information about screening, prevention, treatment and reconstruction options. Reduced-fee screening mammograms will be available as well. Admission is free. Call 832-505-1020 for more information.
