Four Wednesdays in July, UTMB faculty physicians, who are experts in oncology prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship, will share the latest in evidence-based medical knowledge. Bring a friend and come to one lecture or attend all four. There is no charge, but we do ask you to register in advance. Wednesday, July 24: New and Improved Treatment for Breast Cancer. Presenters: Drs. Sunny Hatch and Techksell McKnight Washington.

Wednesday, July 31: Integrative Oncology. Presenters: Drs. Victor Sierpina and Lubya Levine.

Breast Cancer Screening and Risk Reduction: Know Your Risk – Wednesday, July 10. Presenters: Drs. Techksell McKnight Washington and Angelica Robinson. 

Are you are at an increased risk for breast cancer? Learn about tools that doctors use to assess patient’s risk for breast cancer as well as the breast cancer risks of family members. What should you do if your doctor tells you that you are at increased risk of developing breast cancer? 

Discover cancer risk reduction options such as the new cancer prevention therapies and increased breast cancer surveillance. When should you start getting mammograms and when should you stop? You’ll get the latest mammography guideline and hear about the recent screening guideline. You’ll also discover the role of screening MRI.

Breast Surgery and Breast Reconstruction –Wednesday,July 17. Presenters: Drs.Colleen Silva and Karen Powers. 

Have you ever wondered why some women get to keep their breasts when they have cancer and others have their breasts removed?  Have you wondered what exactly lymph nodes are and why they are important? Do you want to learn about the latest recommendations and advances in breast surgery and breast reconstruction?

Dr. Silva, UTMB breast surgeon and Director of Breast Health and Dr. Powers, UTMB breast plastic reconstructive surgeon will discuss these topics and answer your questions. 

New and Improved Treatment for Breast Cancer – Wednesday, July 24. Presenters: Drs. Sunny Hatch and Techksell McKnight Washington.

Learn new technical advancements in radiation delivery for the treatment of breast cancer. Radiation: What is it? How does it work? Does everybody need it? What should you expect? Will hair fall out? Will you be sick?   

You’ll learn all the latest advances. Be brought up to date on chemotherapy and hormonal therapies. How do doctors decide who gets which? Learn about the latest advances including tailoring treatment to the individual’s unique situation. 

Integrative Oncology – Wednesday, July 31. Presenters: Drs. Victor Sierpina and Lyuba Levine. 

Integrative Oncology offers a full range of services for those interested in the prevention of cancer, support during treatment, and tools for survivors. UTMB Health supports your decision-making with resources for your physical, mental, and psychosocial  empowerment. These include stress management therapies, individualized nutrition and fitness programs, evidence-based treatments for side effects of cancer treatment, appropriate counseling regarding supplements, herbs, and medications, and multiple approaches to pain management including massage, acupuncture, physical therapy, and mind-body approaches. 

Learn how these approaches can help turn you from a survivor into a "thriver". You'll explore possibilities for integrative modalities offered right here at UTMB, which can support you as you recover and rediscover your healthy tomorrows. Once your treatment phase is behind you, you will not be alone.

Free Functional Fitness Sessions! Do you know that OLLI offers free fitness classes all year ‘round for the entire community, even those who are not members of OLLI? Sessions are held every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday morning in the Nautilus Room from 9 AM to 10 AM. This is a volunteer-led activity where folks gather to keep fit, enjoy meeting new people, and encourage one another to follow healthy practices.  Drop by and see why this activity has continued for years.
 
Free Indoor Walking Track…open to everyone. OLLI Membership is not required.
Everyone is encouraged to “get a move on” and enjoy the indoor, climate-controlled walking track inside the Island Community Center at 4700 Broadway. Go at your own pace for a mile or any part of a mile.  Stay fit while you have fun.  Give it a try today! Bring a friend and discover how a “walking buddy” can motivate you to remain committed to a regularly scheduled fitness activity.
